HELPERS

Caring for Roberta

Many people played important roles for Roberta personally (and also for us), at successive stages during her melancholy swan song. Some came into our circle as consultants, some as employees; some shared Roberta's home for a time, and some became our trusted contacts as staff of the Odd Fellows Home (Fairview) in Groton.

All these individuals became for a time members of Roberta's extended family, contributing to her care from their own stock of personal generosity, but also apparently motivated by Roberta's characteristically inclusive attitude, her deep personal involvement in music, and her good sense of lowbrow fun. They also learned many of her weaknesses, and helped her to cope. Each in their own way, they helped Roberta not only to function but also to retain aspects of her own personality, as her inborn grasp of the person she had been grew tenuous.

A list of Roberta's helpers (first names only) includes at least the persons listed below. But there are some whose names we cannot remember--we regret any such lapses and beg their pardon. To all who helped, we express our sincerest thanks.
